NATIONAL: EVMs Get Colorful Makeover for Bihar Polls
Voter-Friendly EVM Upgrade
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled a significant overhaul of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot papers, introducing color photographs of candidates.
This change, set to debut in the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, aims to make voting more accessible and transparent.
The new design ensures voters can easily identify candidates, especially in regions with lower literacy rates.
Enhanced Ballot Design
Under the revised guidelines, each candidate’s photo will occupy three-fourths of the designated space on the ballot paper, prioritizing visibility.
Serial numbers and candidate names, including the NOTA option, will be printed in bold with a font size of 30 for clarity.
These updates align with Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
Printing Specifications
The ECI has mandated the use of 70 GSM pink paper with specific RGB values for Assembly election ballots to ensure uniformity.
This standardized approach reduces errors and enhances the voting experience.
The initiative is part of 28 voter-centric reforms introduced by the ECI over the past six months.
Bihar Elections Context
With the Bihar Assembly elections for 243 seats approaching, the ECI is also conducting a special intensive revision of voter lists.
