National: Deepfake Sadhguru: Rs 3.75 Cr Trap
A Bengaluru woman fell victim to a sophisticated cyber scam, losing Rs 3.75 crore after trusting an AI-generated deepfake video featuring spiritual leader Sadhguru. The fraudsters lured her with promises of high returns from a trading app, exploiting her lack of awareness about deepfake technology. The case, reported recently, highlights the growing dangers of AI-driven deception.
The Bait on YouTube
On February 25, 2025, 57-year-old retired resident Varsha Gupta from CV Raman Nagar stumbled upon the video while browsing YouTube. Sadhguru appeared to endorse investing just $250 in a trading platform for massive profits.
Unaware of deepfake manipulation, she clicked the link below the video, initiating contact with the scammers.
Building False Trust
A person identifying as Walid B reached out, posing as a representative of the “Mirax” app using foreign phone numbers and emails. He guided her to download the app and conducted Zoom sessions on trading strategies to build credibility.
When Walid was unavailable, another individual, Michael C, stepped in to provide instructions, further solidifying her confidence in the scheme.
Draining the Savings
From February to April 2025, Gupta transferred funds in multiple installments from her bank accounts and credit cards to accounts specified by the fraudsters. The total amounted to Rs 3.75 crore.
Realizing the deception upon attempting withdrawals, she approached the police, prompting an official complaint.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have registered a case and suspect involvement of a larger cybercrime network. The probe focuses on tracing the international connections and app origins to dismantle the operation.
