INTERNATIONAL: China Unveils DF-5C Missile at Victory Day Parade
Showcasing Military Might in Beijing
China debuted its DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) during the Victory Day parade in Tiananmen Square, commemorating the 80th anniversary of WWII’s end.
The event, attended by 26 world leaders, highlighted China’s advanced military capabilities.
Reported by Global Times, the parade featured a range of cutting-edge weaponry, reinforcing China’s strategic posture.
DF-5C: Global Reach and Precision
The DF-5C, with a range exceeding 20,000 kilometers, can target any global location using China’s Beidou navigation system for enhanced accuracy.
Its Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRV) enable it to carry up to 10 warheads, capable of striking multiple targets simultaneously.
Traveling at 10 times the speed of sound, it challenges advanced air defense systems like THAAD.
Innovative Launch and Design
Transported in three segments for rapid assembly, the DF-5C offers faster launch preparation than its predecessor, the DF-5.
It can be deployed from large silos, enhancing operational flexibility, according to nuclear weapons expert Professor Yang Chengjin.
Its design allows penetration of underground bunkers, amplifying its strategic deterrence.
Strengthening the Nuclear Triad
The parade introduced the JL-1 air-launched and JL-3 submarine-launched nuclear missiles, completing China’s nuclear triad alongside the DF-5C and DF-61 ICBMs.
Other displays included the DF-26D missile, the GJ-11 AI-powered drone, and the Type-100 intelligent tanks, showcasing technological advancements.
The LY-1 laser system and AJX002 sea drone underscored China’s focus on versatile warfare capabilities.
Global Strategic Implications
The DF-5C’s debut signals China’s intent to counter U.S. naval dominance and regional threats amid tensions over Taiwan and U.S. tariffs. The parade’s display of hypersonic and AI-driven systems highlights Beijing’s push for military supremacy, raising global security concerns.
China’s advancements contrast with its stated commitment to peaceful development, prompting varied international reactions.
