NATIONAL: Calcutta HC Grants Bail to Sharmistha in Communal Remarks Case
Interim Bail Granted
The Calcutta High Court granted interim bail to Sharmistha Panoli, a 22-year-old law student and social media influencer, on Thursday, following her arrest by Kolkata Police. The decision came in response to a case involving alleged communal remarks made in a video titled “Operation Sindoor” posted on social media.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Panoli was apprehended in Gurugram, Haryana, last week after an FIR was filed at Garden Reach Police Station, Kolkata, accusing her of hurting religious sentiments. The court’s ruling noted that the complaint did not establish a cognizable offense, prompting the interim bail order.
Bail Conditions
The court mandated Panoli’s release upon furnishing a bond and security of Rs 10,000. She has been directed to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and is prohibited from leaving India without prior judicial approval.
Travel Provisions for Education
While travel restrictions were imposed, the court permitted the trial court to evaluate any future applications from Panoli seeking to travel abroad for educational purposes. This provision ensures flexibility for her academic pursuits while adhering to legal oversight.
Release from Custody
On Friday, Panoli was released from Alipore Jail, marking the conclusion of her brief detention. The case has drawn attention due to her dual role as a law student and a prominent social media figure, highlighting the intersection of free speech and legal accountability.
