NATIONAL: Bombay HC Orders Maratha Protesters to Clear Mumbai Streets

Judicial Directive Amid Chaos
The Bombay High Court issued a stern directive to Maratha reservation activists, led by Manoj Jarange Patil, to vacate Mumbai’s streets by noon on September 2, 2025, citing severe traffic disruptions.

The court, addressing protests at Azad Maidan, limited the number of demonstrators to 5,000 to restore order during the Ganeshotsav festival.

The bench criticized the agitation for violating the Public Meetings, Agitations, and Processions Rules, 2025, emphasizing the need for peaceful conduct.

Maratha Quota Agitation Intensifies
Manoj Jarange Patil, spearheading the demand for a 10 percent Maratha reservation under the OBC category, has drawn thousands to South Mumbai, paralyzing key routes like CSMT, Fort, and Churchgate.

His indefinite hunger strike, now escalated to include refusing water, underscores his resolve to secure Kunbi status for Marathas.

Patil has rejected negotiations, insisting on a government resolution, and warned of larger protests if demands remain unmet.

Traffic and Public Disruption
The influx of 35,000–45,000 protesters and over 8,000 vehicles has crippled Mumbai’s transport network, with Central and Harbour Line trains delayed and bus services disrupted.

The protests have sparked complaints from commuters, traders, and media, with reports of vandalism adding to the chaos.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed resources to manage sanitation and medical needs at Azad Maidan.

Government’s Stance and Challenges
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reiterated the state’s commitment to addressing Maratha demands within legal frameworks but highlighted constitutional limitations on granting blanket OBC status.

A cabinet subcommittee’s talks with protesters have yielded no resolution, with further legal consultations underway.

The agitation has fueled political tensions, with the opposition accused of past neglect, while the BJP defends its earlier reservation efforts.

Court’s Call for Normalcy
The High Court, led by Justices Ravindra V. Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad, expressed impatience with the protests’ impact on Mumbai’s daily life, particularly during a festive period.

It directed the state to prevent additional protesters from entering the city, aiming to mitigate economic and social disruptions.

Retail losses and public inconvenience have prompted calls for swift resolution, with the court prioritizing public order.
