Business Desk: Big Mac on Platform 1? Railways’ Fast Food Gamble

Long waits at Indian railway stations might soon come with a side of fries instead of just samosas. The Railway Board is set to greenlight premium food outlets, blending global chains with local favorites to spice up passenger meals. This shift promises more than convenience; it could redefine how millions grab a bite amid the hustle of travel.

A circular dated November 13, 2025, to all zonal railways lays the groundwork for “Premium Brand Catering Outlets.” Drawing from a South Central Railway proposal, the update to the 2017 catering policy allows single-brand setups where passenger demand and space justify it. No more limiting eats to basic stalls – think burgers and ice cream right on the platform.

Over 1,200 stations nationwide, especially those under redevelopment in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, stand to benefit. Zonal authorities will assess footfall and layout before approving spots, ensuring these additions fit seamlessly without disrupting existing quotas. The move aligns with broader station modernizations, turning transit hubs into mini food courts.

Global Chains Meet Desi Delights

Expect a mix of international heavyweights and homegrown heroes. Brands like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Baskin Robbins could rub shoulders with Haldiram’s and Bikanerwala. Whether company-owned or franchised, selections will roll out through the transparent e-auction process, locking in five-year terms for winners.

Current food stall regulations will apply, covering hygiene, pricing, and operations. This includes mandatory tie-ups with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation for quality oversight. Officials emphasize that outlets must enhance, not overshadow, the network’s daily 1 million-plus meals served.

Key rollout features include:

  • Demand-driven placements to match busy routes.
  • Franchise flexibility for faster expansion.
  • Integration with station upgrades for better flow.

As implementation guidelines drop soon, the policy could boost revenues while curbing overpriced vendors. Travelers, long tired of subpar options, might finally savor variety without stepping off-site. Yet, questions linger: Will affordability keep pace, or will it cater mostly to urban wallets?
