ANDHRA PRADESH: Andhra’s Amaravati: A Visionary Metropolis in the Making
Strategic Collaboration with Singapore
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, during his visit to Singapore, engaged with key stakeholders to advance Andhra Pradesh’s capital, Amaravati, as a futuristic urban hub. He urged the Singapore Housing Development Board to participate in Amaravati’s urban housing initiatives, emphasizing innovative designs and sustainable practices. Meetings with Singapore’s Urban Development Authority, Corporation Enterprise, and World Bank representatives underscored a commitment to global partnerships.
Naidu acknowledged past disruptions in Andhra Pradesh-Singapore relations and stressed ongoing efforts to rebuild trust. The Singapore government’s prior contribution of a master plan for Amaravati sets a foundation for renewed collaboration. The World Bank’s involvement further strengthens the project’s global credibility.
Bidadari Estate: A Model for Sustainable Urbanization
Naidu toured Singapore’s Bidadari Estate, a 250-acre eco-friendly housing project lauded for its integration with nature. The estate, transformed from a former cemetery into a vibrant “City in a Garden,” preserves trees and water resources while housing 10,000 families. Singaporean officials highlighted affordable, high-quality residences designed to enhance community well-being.
This model inspires Amaravati’s development, with Naidu advocating for environmentally conscious urban planning. The Bidadari project exemplifies how sustainable design can harmonize with modern infrastructure, offering a blueprint for Andhra Pradesh’s capital.
Inviting Singaporean Investment
In discussions with Singapore’s Commerce and Industry Minister Tan See Lang, Naidu addressed challenges faced by Singaporean firms under the previous YSRCP government. He invited participation in Andhra Pradesh’s Partnership Conference in November to foster investment in key sectors. These include green hydrogen projects, transmission corridors, and port development.
Naidu emphasized Singapore’s expertise in ports, logistics, human resources, science, technology, and trade. Minister Tan expressed willingness to collaborate on housing and sub-sea cable projects, aligning with World Bank initiatives in green energy and urban development.
Elevating Sports Infrastructure
Naidu outlined plans to establish Singapore-style sports schools in Vijayawada, Vizianagaram, and Kadapa, inspired by a visit to Singapore’s Sports School alongside badminton coach Pullela Gopichand. These institutions aim to serve as hubs for sports, entertainment, tourism, and commerce. A dedicated sports city is planned for Amaravati, with integrated complexes in Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, and the capital.
The Andhra Pradesh Sports Policy enhances incentives, including:
- Olympic gold medalists: ₹7 crore and Group-1 jobs
- Silver medalists: ₹5 crore
- Bronze medalists: ₹3 crore
- Increased reservation for sportspersons in government jobs from 2% to 3%
Singapore’s High Performance Sports System, which trains students from age 12 in collaboration with national sports bodies, offers a replicable model for Andhra Pradesh.
A Forward-Looking Vision
Naidu’s engagements in Singapore reflect a strategic push to position Amaravati as a global city through sustainable urban planning and international partnerships. By leveraging Singapore’s expertise and World Bank support, Andhra Pradesh aims to create a capital that blends innovation with environmental stewardship. The state’s focus on sports and infrastructure further signals a holistic approach to development.
The upcoming Partnership Conference will be a critical platform for deepening ties with Singapore, fostering economic growth, and realizing Amaravati’s potential as a city of the future.
