Engineers Bear the Brunt

Public filings under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act in key U.S. states like New York, California, New Jersey, and Washington paint a clear picture. Out of roughly 4,700 jobs eliminated there, nearly 40 percent belonged to engineering positions.

Mid-level software development engineers faced the steepest reductions, underscoring a broader trend of trimming technical layers built up during pandemic-era hiring booms. While these filings capture only a slice of the total, they spotlight the tech workforce’s vulnerability in this restructuring.

Not AI’s Fault, But Culture’s Overhaul

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been upfront: these moves stem from a deliberate cultural reset, not economic pressures or AI automation alone. The goal is to transform the company into what he calls the “world’s largest startup,” stripping away excess layers for quicker decision-making.

Rapid growth in recent years swelled headcounts and hierarchies, Jassy explained in internal notes. By flattening structures, Amazon aims to redirect energy toward high-impact areas like customer innovation, even as it invests billions in AI infrastructure.

The layoffs extend beyond code to creative and experimental units, blending efficiency with strategic pivots.

  • Gaming: High-profile projects, including the “Lord of the Rings” MMO, have been shelved, freeing resources for core priorities.

This isn’t isolated; 2025 has seen 231 tech firms cut over 113,000 roles, reflecting an industry-wide recalibration toward agility.
