MOVIE DESK: Aamir Khan’s Dahaa character to spotlight Rajinikanth’s “Coolie

Post-Production in Full Swing
The action thriller Coolie, headlined by Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has wrapped principal photography and is now in post-production. Produced by Sun Pictures, the film is gearing up for a grand theatrical release on August 14, 2025, in multiple formats, including IMAX. The project, with a reported budget of ₹375 crore, promises a cinematic spectacle.

Aamir Khan’s Pivotal Cameo
Bollywood icon Aamir Khan joins the ensemble as Dahaa, a character unveiled through a striking first-look poster featuring him with a cigar pipe and rugged demeanor. Described as a game-changer, Khan’s role is rumored to feature a high-octane 15-minute climax sequence, potentially rivaling the impact of Suriya’s Rolex in Vikram.

Star-Studded Ensemble Cast
The film boasts a formidable lineup, including

  • Rajinikanth as Deva, Coolie No. 1421
  • Nagarjuna Akkineni, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, and Soubin Shahir in key roles
  • Pooja Hegde in a special dance number
This pan-Indian cast enhances Coolie’s appeal across Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam audiences.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Ambitious Vision
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for his Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), has clarified that Coolie is a standalone film centered on gold smuggling, distinct from his drug-themed LCU projects. Despite this, speculation persists about potential connections to LCU characters, given the ensemble’s depth. The screenplay, co-written with Chandhru Anbazhagan, promises intense action and gripping dialogue.

Aamir-Rajinikanth Reunion
Khan’s involvement marks his first South Indian film and a reunion with Rajinikanth after their 1995 collaboration, Aatank Hi Aatank. Khan, a self-professed Rajinikanth fan, accepted the role without reading the script, hinting at a meticulously crafted character that could redefine the film’s narrative arc.

Cinematic and Musical Grandeur
Anirudh Ravichander’s music, including the viral Chikitu Vibe track, amplifies the film’s anticipation, with Girish Gangadharan handling cinematography and Anbariv choreographing stunts. The teaser pays homage to Rajinikanth’s iconic coolie roles, embedding nostalgic easter eggs from his filmography. Coolie is poised to clash with War 2 at the box office, setting the stage for a monumental showdown.
